The days of Communist rule in Serbia meant the people were not allowed to own properties or land, but the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the collapse of the Communist rule meant the people inherited their homes. The market opened up, but was soon stifled by years of civil war, then again by the NATO incursion in the region. Recent years have seen the market picking up pace, albeit very slowly, and an encouragement for foreign investments means potential off plan buyers in the country are involved in simple and beneficial transactions. As part of a former Communist state, Serbia is prone to the same pitfalls as any other former Communist country – all land titles should be checked in detail by more than one independent party to ensure legality of ownership, as reclamations can be lost and confused over time.
