Purchasing a property in Serbia is a relatively straight forward affair and has been simplified in recent years to encourage foreign investment. First of all, a respected local lawyer should be employed to help with all dealings and documentations, ensuring everything is above-board and things don’t go wrong. Once a property is agreed upon a pre-contract is drawn up and sent, along with other documentation, to the local Land Registry. Here the legality of property ownership/land titles etc. is checked, and once the green light is given the sale can go through in full, with contracts being signed in the presence of the buyer, the seller, a notary and any lawyers employed. Once the process is complete all applicable taxes and outstanding fees can be settled.
